IPHONE GUIDE
iPhone video too large to upload? What to do
When a video upload fails, first check whether file size is the cause and what size and format the destination accepts. Lighten can prepare a smaller, separate copy on your iPhone while keeping the full duration and existing sound. Meeting a limit depends on the source and your requirements.
Steps in Lighten
Read the current upload requirements
Note the size limit for each video, accepted formats and any pixel requirements. If no limit is stated, check the current page or error message instead of assuming an old limit found online.
Import the original video
Choose the video from Photos or Files in Lighten. If the original is in iCloud or with a file provider, the system may first download it. Lighten processes the media on your device.
Set size and format
Enable a size limit and enter the destination’s value with KB or MB. Choose a smaller compression preference when needed. Start with the original format unless a change is required. If MP4 is required, select an available MP4 output and review any format or HDR change notice.
Set frame dimensions when needed
Without fixed pixel requirements, a longest-edge limit can scale down proportionally. For exact width and height, manually adjust and confirm a fixed crop, reviewing the start, middle and end. That framing applies throughout the clip; it does not trim the duration.
Inspect the prepared video
Check actual bytes, pixel dimensions and duration, plus whether the original sound is retained. Play the result to inspect the picture and audio. A pre-processing estimate is not a substitute for checking the finished file.
Save and select the new copy
Save the checked result to Files or Photos, then return to the original page and choose that copy. You can also use the system share sheet. The destination may process or reject it; generating a result does not mean it was uploaded or delivered.
Why is there no guarantee for every size limit?
Full duration, frame dimensions, existing audio and preserved information all require space. A long clip or complex scene may have no encoding candidate that satisfies a very low cap.
Lighten will not silently shorten a video, remove sound or change the confirmed crop to fit. Exact dimensions are not automatically reduced. Unsupported dimensions require your approval to change rather than being rounded silently.
What can I change if the limit is not met?
Read the failure reason, then change a condition you are allowed to change. Try a smaller compression preference, or reduce the longest edge when no exact dimensions are required. Check quality, actual bytes and sound again after each new result.
If the complete video and upload requirements cannot both be met, clarify the requirements or use another submission method accepted by the destination. Repeatedly lowering the cap does not guarantee success. Lighten does not automatically remove audio or trim duration to fit.
Check the size unit as well as the number
Lighten uses 1 KB = 1,000 bytes and 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. Confirm the unit when entering a cap and read the actual byte count on the result screen, rather than relying only on a rounded MB label.
Any pixel and format requirements must also be met. Passing a byte-size check does not show that another service has accepted or approved the upload.
Does cropping cut out part of the timeline?
No. Cropping changes the spatial frame. The confirmed fixed crop applies throughout the video while preserving full duration and existing audio. Preview several points so important content later in the clip stays within the frame.
A longest-edge limit scales proportionally without a mandatory crop. If a selection needs enlarging, review and accept the notice: enlargement adds pixels, not real detail.
Can I try one video for free?
The daily free allowance includes one video export. Pro is a one-time purchase for batch processing and no daily export count limit. All results still need actual file validation; purchasing Pro does not make every source fit any arbitrarily low cap.
